Little Ted is helping to take Alex's dog for a walk - I wonder who has the most energy?

Little Ted was round at Alex’s house. They had been playing in the garden but now they were going to take Alex’s dog Ben for a walk with his Mummy. Ben was no longer a puppy and had grown to  twice the size he used to be and was full of energy.

Once they had got organized and put Ben safely on his dog lead, they set off with Alex’s Mummy holding the leash and the boys jogging along beside Ben. When they got to the park, the boys were allowed to hold the lead and run with Ben as fast as they could go. Alex and Little Ted both tried to outrun the dog but he easily beat them every time.

“Do you think Ben can run as fast because he has 4 legs instead of 2?” Little Ted asked. “I can’t keep up.”

“Me neither” agreed Alex “he’s super fast. Maybe if we had extra legs we’d have more speed.”

“Lets take turns running” Little Ted suggested. “You run with Ben to the trees and back, then I’ll run over to where your Mummy is standing.”

Little Ted and Alex raced backwards and forwards and soon felt exhausted, but Ben didn’t seem in the least bit tired. Then they tried throwing a ball for Ben to chase but he brought it back almost as quickly as they could throw it.

Finally they collapsed in a heap next to Alex’s Mummy. While they were resting she took a frisbee out of her bag and starting throwing this for Ben. It was a game he had played before and Ben raced after the frisbee and even caught in mid-air sometimes. Once they had their breath back and after their rest, Little Ted took and Alex turns trying to throw the frisbee to each other. This however was much harder than it looked and most of the time Ben reached the frisbee first and ran back to Alex’s mummy with it.  Eventually though even Ben started to look a bit tired from all his running around, so Alex and Little Ted practiced making him sit, stay and give a paw and then rewarded him with a treat for being such a good dog.

Later on, when they were back at Alex’s house Little Ted’s Daddy came to pick him up but uh oh, Little Ted had disappeared. He wasn’t in the living room. He wasn’t in the kitchen or Alex’s bedroom or the garden. Where could he be? Then his Daddy spotted him, curled up beside Ben in his basket, fast asleep.

“Wake up Little Ted, looks like you’ve had an exhausting afternoon” said his Daddy.

Little Ted rubbed his eyes and yawned. “Hello Daddy” Little Ted said sleepily “I don’t know how Ben does it. We ran and ran and ran until we were too tired to run, but Ben just kept on wanting to run some more.”

“That’s because most dogs need lots of exercise, particularly young dogs like Ben. And they really like being out and about seeing new things and meeting other dogs. Its their form of socializing. Life would be pretty dull for them if they spent all day in the house and they’d get bored, just like you do Little Ted.”

“Well I couldn’t run around like Ben every day, I’d be worn out. I think I’ll stick to doing two legs worth of exercise rather than four.”
