Little Ted’s nursery was putting on a show for the children’s parents and carers and Little Ted was desperate to be one of the main characters. But first all the children had to do a short audition in front of the rest of the class by repeating one of two lines Mrs Miller had taught them. The boys all had to say “Halt who goes there” while the girls said “Where has my crown gone?”
After the auditions, Mrs Miller gave them their roles. The show was called The Missing Crown and the main character was called Queen Clara who was very regal and liked to wave a lot. But because she was a Queen, she did a special royal wave that was very slow and elegant. Queen Clara lived in a castle and had a beautiful crown full of expensive jewels which needed to be guarded around the clock.
In the show, many of the boys and girls in Little Ted’s class were Guardians of the Crown Jewels and had to wear a pointy helmet with a gold ribbon on it. The Guardians would march up and down looking important and stop anyone who came close to the jewels and ask (very loudly) “Halt who goes there”.
One day however the Guardians were distracted by a cheeky monkey who tried to knock their hats off. He was really just a diversion for a jewel thief and while the Guardians had their backs turned trying to catch the cheeky monkey, his accomplice stole the crown jewels then hid behind the coat stand.
Queen Clara who was sitting on a throne (which was actually Mrs Miller’s chair) suddenly stopped waving and asked “Where has my crown gone?”
Everyone looked at where the crown should be and realized Oh No, it was missing.
“Don’t worry your highness” Little Plod the policeman said “I’ll find it for you” and he took out his magnifying glass and starting searching.
Little Plod walked up and down, looking under cushions, chairs and even the Guardians hats. While he was searching the Guardians started to follow him around, until soon everyone was trailng behind him like a giant snake with Little Plod at the front.
“Stop!” said Queen Clara who was still sitting on her throne “Where is my crown? I want my crown back”
Poor Little Plod was just about to give up and say that he didn’t know where the crown jewels had gone, when he spotted the robber hiding behind the coats with the crown jewels.
“There he is” said Little Plod pointing “Quick form a circle around him”. The Guardians all looked at where he was pointing and the giant human snake coiled around the thief.
“I’ll take those” declared Little Plod as he plucked the crown jewels from the thief’s hands, and he returned the crown safely back to Queen Clara.
“Oh thank you Little Ted, I mean Little Plod. You’ve saved my precious jewels.” said Queen Clara gratefully as she shook his hand.
Little Ted grinned from ear to ear and gave his Mummy and Daddy who were watching in the audience a little wave.
“Hooray for Little Ted” said the Guardians “And Hooray for Queen Clara” and they all gave a great big cheer. Way hay.
