Little Ted and the tale of the ice cream fairies

Little Ted's Mummy is reading him a story about fairies that live at the bottom of the garden and who want to see what ice cream tastes like.

Little Ted’s Mummy was reading him a story about fairies that lived at the bottom of the garden of a small boy called Harrison. The fairies were very tiny and lived hidden from sight in the long grass, but there were two fairies Sophia and Keira who were always watching what Harrison was doing.

One sunny day they were playing hide and seek amongst the flowers when they stopped for a rest.

“Would you like some dandelion tea?” Sophia asked “It’s quite tasty”

“I’m bored of dandelion tea” complained Keira “I want something cold and sweet like the ice cream Harrison is eating. I wonder if he will drop some so I can taste it.”

“You can’t do that! You’re not allowed to let anybody see you” replied Sophia “Remember?”

“I’d like to try ice cream just once” Keira continued “Please can we at least get close just in case.”

Sophia didn’t know what to say. She also secretly wanted to taste ice cream and she had seen it dripping on the grass when the weather was hot. If they stuck close to the flower borders they could stay out of sight and maybe, just maybe some ice cream would drip nearby.

“Okay, but we have to be very quiet and stay hidden. Are you listening Keira?”

Keira nodded, then the 2 fairies joined hands and carefully made their way to the top of the garden.

Meanwhile Harrison was enjoying his ice cream cone. He liked to lick the ice cream from the top and also to bite off the bottom of the cone and try to suck it through. It was good fun but quite messy and the fairies watched as he ate it, willing just a tiny piece to fall. He was nearly finished when Plop! a drip landed on a nearby leaf.

“Look” Keira said “He’s dropped some.”

“Sshh” whispered Sophia “He’ll notice us” and they held their breath while they waited to see if Harrison had heard them.

Luckily he didn’t appear to notice and was about to start walking away when something caught his eye. Keira had been too impatient and had edged towards the leaf with golden pool of ice cream on it. But oh help, she’d been spotted.

Too late, she realised that she’d been seen and stopped frozen to the spot. Sophia went and joined her so she wasn’t alone.

“Are you fairies?” Harrison asked as he peered at them. “You look like the pictures in my book. I wondered if there were fairies in my garden because there are lots of wild flowers under the tree and some shapes that look like houses.“

“Please don’t tell anyone you’ve seen us” said Sophia and Keira at the same time “we’ll get into lots of trouble. We just wanted to taste your ice cream.”

“Oh no, I’ve eaten it all” said Harrison looking sad.

“Not all of it” replied Sophia, “you dripped some onto that leaf and that’s plenty for little fairies like us. What does it taste like?”

“Why don’t you just try it. It’s really sweet.”

Sophia and Keira both dipped a finger in the ice cream and licked it. It was delicious! And soon it was all gone.

“We need to go now” said Keira “Thank you for sharing your ice cream, even if it dripped by accident!”

“Yes thank you” repeated Sophia “and now that you know that fairies are real and like ice cream, please keep it secret or we won’t be able to come and see  you again.”

“Okay I promise. Bye bye ice cream fairies, come and see me again.” And before Harrison had finished his sentence the fairies had disappeared.

After his Mummy had finished reading the story, Little Ted asked “Do you think there are fairies at the bottom of our garden?”

“Well you never know” replied his Mummy “perhaps tomorrow you can use the magnifying glass to see if you can spot them. And you can build them a fairy house using the pebbles next to the path.”

“Great” Little Ted said “I hope I meet the ice cream fairies.”
