Little Ted is dressing up and pretending to be a doctor while his Daddy is bravely being his patient. What will the diagnosis be?

Little Ted was in the mood for dressing up and playing pretend doctors and patients. His Daddy had given him an old white shirt to use as a coat and he had a small doctors case with a pretend stethoscope, thermometer and clip-board. He also had a face mask and cap to keep his hair out of the way.

So far he had spent the morning putting a bandage on Big Bear’s arm, checking Fluffy’s temperature and pretending to do an operation on one of his Action Men. Now he was ready to move on to bigger things and try practicing his medical skills on a real live patient.

“Daddy will you play doctors and patients with me? I’m the doctor and you can be someone who had come to hospital because they have a sore tummy” Little Ted said.

“Will it involve lying on the sofa while you examine me” asked his Daddy hopefully.

“Yes, I will need to give you a thorough checkover so I can work out what is wrong with you.”

Little Ted’s Daddy stretched out on the sofa and made himself comfy. First Little Ted thought he would check his temperature so he put the thermometer in his Daddy’s mouth. Luckily his Daddy had anticipated this and had given the thermometer a good wash before they started.

“Hmmn” Little Ted said “Your temperature is very high. Do you feel hot?” and he laid his hand on his Daddy’s forehead to check.

“Now I need to look in your mouth, say aah” Little Ted instructed and he peered inside.

“Mmmn, your tongue looks a bit funny. Stick it out so I can have a closer look.”

His Daddy did as he asked and stuck his tongue out as far as it would go then wiggled it about.

“Hwff, guff, bin ow” said his Daddy.

“What was that?

“Can I stick it back in now?”

“Yes okay. What should we check next. Where about are you feeling pain?”

His Daddy pointed to his tummy and lifted his shirt so Little Ted could make a proper examination.

“Ooh careful Little Ted, your hands are cold.”

“It isn’t Little Ted it is Dr Ted today. Now I need to listen to your heart with my stethothingy.”

“Its called a stethoscope. I hope you’ve warmed it up for me.”

Little Ted put the end on his Daddy’s chest and listened carefully. If he kept very very still he could  hear his heart beating lub dub lub dub lub dub. Next Little Ted put the stethoscope on his Daddy’s tummy and he heard a louder gurgling sound.

“Sssf that doesn’t sound too good. When did you last have something to eat?” Dr Ted asked.

“I had a biscuit with my coffee about an hour ago but nothing else since breakfast. Do you know what’s wrong with me Doctor? Will I be okay?”

Dr Ted continued to check his patient over, testing his reactions when he banged on his knee with a toy hammer and prodding his tummy to see where it was feeling tender.  After a thorough examination he decided he had reached a diagnosis.

“You have a severe case of gurgle-it is. It sounds nasty but with some special nursing care and some more biscuits I think we can cure you.”

“Phew” said his Daddy “I was getting worried.”

“Its okay. If we were playing Operation I might want to remove the butterflies from your stomach but I’m not operating today so I’m going to prescribe some biscuits instead. Take two with a hot drink and you should feel better by teatime.”
