Bake me a cake Little Ted!
Show Notes Transcript

Little Ted is helping to bake some cup cakes for a fund-raiser. Will his special baking song make the cakes extra tasty?

“Come and help me Little Ted” called his Mummy “I’m going to bake some cup cakes for the fund-raiser on Saturday. You can help me with the measuring and mixing. Remember, we are trying to raise money to buy a new climbing frame for nursery.”

Little Ted came running into the kitchen – he loved baking, and he particularly loved to eat the results, although his Mummy must have read his mind: “Now remember, these cakes are for the fund-raiser so don’t go sneaking a taste when I’m not looking.”

“Okay. How do we make cup cakes again?” Little Ted asked “I’ve forgotten.”

“It’s pretty easy” replied his Mummy “we just need to whisk the ingredients together, bake them in the oven then decorate them once they’ve cooled down. You can start by putting the paper cases on the cup cake tray then get me the sugar and flour out of the cupboard. “

“Can I use the rainbow coloured cases?”

“Of course, and we have some edible Easter chick decorations to go on top of them. Ready Little Ted? Help me measure out the sugar. Here’s a spoon and I want you to put 5 spoonfuls in this bowl and we’ll check how much that weighs on the scales. Are you ready? One, two, three, four, five.”

Little Ted concentrated and counted along as he carefully tipped the spoonfuls into the bowl. Then he helped his Mummy measure the butter and add it to the sugar, and watched as she beat the mixture with a whisk until it was a pale cream colour.

“Why do you use that?” Little Ted asked pointing at the whisk.

“It adds air to the mixture so the cakes are light and fluffy.”

Next he got two eggs very carefully out of the egg box and passed them to his Mummy to break into the bowl then she whisked the mixture some more.

Finally they added the rest of the ingredients and Little Ted gently stirred the mixture.

“Now we have to put this into the cupcake cases” said his Mummy “will we do it together? We only need to fill them half way because the mixture will rise when it’s cooking.”

Once the cakes were baking in the oven, Little Ted was impatient for them to be ready so his Mummy asked “Can you remember our baking song?” Little Ted nodded. “Well why don’t you sing it and make a wish that the cakes will be extra tasty and raise lots of money for the fund-raiser.”

Little Ted closed his eyes, made the wish and started chanting:

 Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker's man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
Mix it and stir it and bake it just right
Good from the first 'til the very last bite

Little Ted clapped his hands as he skipped around the kitchen. After what seemed like a very long time, the cakes were ready and his Mummy took them out of the oven and left them to cool down.  So while they were cooling Little Ted sang the baking song again:

 Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker's man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
Mix it and stir it and bake it just right
Good from the first 'til the very last bite

Finally the cakes were cool, and his Mummy made buttercream frosting and put some on each cupcake then it was Little Ted’s turn to add sprinkles and the little Easter chicks. He had just finished when his Daddy came into the kitchen.

“Ooh, cup cakes they look tasty” said his Daddy “Can I have one?”

“Okay” Little Ted said, followed by “That will be 50p please!”
