Little Ted loves to hop, so his Mummy tells him about a game called Hopscotch and shows him how to play it.

Little Ted was hopping along the street, taking turns at using each leg when one got tired.

“Hurry up Little Ted” called his Mummy “we’re going to be late for the doctors.”

“I’m hopping as fast as I can” Little Ted replied. “Why is it called hopping?”

“I have absolutely no idea” said his Mummy but we can look it up later after we’ve been to see the doctor.”

Little Ted had a check-up appointment to make sure he was growing and healthy. When they got to the doctor’s surgery, the receptionist asked their name.

“Little Ted” he replied shyly.

“We’ve an appointment at 10 o’clock” added his Mummy.

“Please take a seat in the waiting area, the doctor will be with you shortly.”

Little Ted hopped over to the children’s area and started playing in the toy house they kept in the corner. After 5 minutes, they heard Little Ted’s name being called and they went in to see the doctor.

“Hello Little Ted, I’m Doctor Sheila, I don’t think we’ve met before.”

“Hi” Little Ted replied very very quietly.

The Doctor then got him to stand on some scales so she could weigh Little Ted and stand up tall with his back against a chart for measuring height. She asked Little Ted his age and what his favourite food was and what he enjoyed doing for exercise.

“I like hopping” Little Ted said “I hopped nearly all the way here. Do you know why it is called hopping?” he asked Doctor Sheila his curiosity overcoming his shyness.

“I don’t believe I do” replied the Doctor “I’ve never really thought about it. But I do know that a kangaroo can hop over 9 metres in a single jump and they have to hop because they can’t move their legs independently.”

“Oh” Little Ted said “I never knew that.”

Once they got back from the doctors, his Mummy announced “Since you like hopping so much Little Ted I’ve got just the game for you – its called Hopscotch. I used to be pretty good at it when I was a child. Go and find the chalk and I’ll draw a hopscotch grid on the path outside and mark the squares 1 to 9. “

After she had finished drawing, his Mummy explained that he had to throw a beanbag onto the first number, hop his way up the grid missing out the box with the beanbag on it, turn around at the top on one leg and hop back to the beginning, picking up the beanbag as he passed it. Next his Mummy threw the beanbag onto square number 2 and it was her turn to hop up the grid and back.

Little Ted really enjoyed the game although he found it tricky hopping without stepping on any of the lines, while his Mummy said she found picking up the beanbag the hardest because she had further to bend down.  Once they had finished the game his Mummy went inside to start making lunch and Little Ted carried on playing Hopscotch by himself.

“Lunchtime Little Ted” called his Mummy a short time later “Hop to it! The kitchen table is just a hop, skip and a jump away.”

“Yay, what are we having?” Little Ted asked.

“Hop dogs” answered his Mummy, laughing at her own joke.
