Little Ted's Daddy tells him about the man on the moon, then helps him build a rocket so he can go and visit him.

Little Ted was staring out of his bedroom window looking at the moon.

“Are you looking for the man on the moon” asked his Daddy as he entered the room.

“What’s that?” Little Ted said “there’s nobody up there.”

“That’s what you think. I think that if you look very carefully when it’s a full moon you might be surprised at what you see.”

Little Ted stared twice as hard at the moon but he still didn’t see anything.

“I don’t know what you mean. I can’t see anybody” Little Ted complained.

“It’s really just a face you can see. Let me help you. Do you see those two dark areas up there, that’s his eyes. And below there are his nose and mouth – look he even seems to be smiling. He looks down on you while you are sleeping and protects young children from having bad dreams.”

Little Ted didn’t have bad dreams very often but he felt better knowing that the man on the moon was watching over him.

“Could I live on the moon?” Little Ted asked.

“No sorry I don’t think that’s possible. The moon gets very hot when it is facing the sun and very cold when its away from the sun. Plus there isn’t any air to breathe which is why astronauts have to wear spacesuits. But that doesn’t stop you from pretending you are visiting the moon. Would you like to go?”

“Yes, I would like to be up very high and look down on everybody. I would be able to see the whole world from up there. I might be able to see what gardens have a swing in them. Can you help me make a rocket tomorrow so I can fly there.”

“What do you think we should use?” asked his Daddy “There’s a big cardboard box in the garage – we can cut a doorway in that and maybe use a smaller box for the pointy nose cone and side fins. Oh and we’d better remember to add a porthole so you can see out on your adventure.”

The following day Little Ted’s Daddy set to work creating his homemade rocket and Little Ted helped him when he could. His Mummy gave him some wrapping paper with stars on it which he put on the wall behind the rocket to help pretend he was in space and he also found some big round stickers that looked a bit like planets which he stuck to the paper. For the finishing touch, with his Daddy’s help Little Ted put his initials - LT1 - on the side of rocket.

“There, I’m ready to go to the moon” Little Ted said. “I won’t be back until teatime.”

Little Ted played inside the rocket for the rest of the day. Because it was such a big box he could both sit and stand inside it and he pretended he was flying across the sky on his way to the moon.  He even wore his space pyjamas with the rocket on the front.

Later on when it was time for bed, his Daddy pointed at the man on the moon again and told Little Ted that now the man on the moon was getting up, it was time for all children go to bed.
