It's "Come as your favourite animal day" at nursery and Little Ted is going as a dinosaur. And with his Daddy's help his crowning glory will be his spikey dinosaur spine.

“ROAR” Little Ted said “ROAR ROAR”

“That’s a loud roar” said his Daddy “Are you a lion?”

“No” Little Ted said “I’m practising at being a dinosaur. We have to dress up as our favourite animal for nursery on Friday and I am going as a Steg-O-Saurus.”

“Is that the dinosaur with the long neck?”

“No Daddy, that’s a Saw-Ro-Pod.  A Steg-O-Saurus has a spikey back and only likes to eat plants. I’m going to wear my dinosaur pyjamas and my dinosaur wellies and I can only have salad or fruit at snacktime.”

“Well you seem to have it all figured out. I wonder what everyone else will go as.”

Little Ted was looking forward to ‘Come as your favourite animal’ day at nursery. He knew some of his friends were going to dress up as cats or dogs but Little Ted had bigger plans. As well as wearing his dinosaur clothes he planned to make (with his Daddy’s help), a spikey hat and spine that would go all the way down his back so he looked like a real dinosaur.

First they cut some long strips from some green card and his Daddy used two of these to make a headband. Next Little Ted cut out some shorter pieces of card and folded them in half, then using scissors carefully cut them at the sides to create a triangle shape but leaving a flat piece in the middle where it was folded.  When you unfolded them they looked a bit like a diamond.  After that Little Ted glued the flat middle part of the diamonds to two of the longer strips of card and left them to dry. The last step after the glue had dried was to turn over the strips so the diamonds were underneath,  fold them up and while his Daddy held both sides together Little Ted used some tape to secure and create a spikey spine.

“Good work Little Ted” said his Daddy “We’ll attach it to the headband before you set out for nursery.”

On Friday, Little Ted was excited that it was finally ‘Come as your favourite animal’ day. He got up extra early and after breakfast laughed as he took off his overnight pyjamas and put on the dinosaur PJs. His Daddy made sure the spikey spine was taped safely to the headband and they set off to walk to nursery.

“ROAR” Little Ted said to everyone they passed “ROAR. I’m a giant Steg-O-Saurus today so please get out of my way.”

“Good Morning Little Ted” said Mrs Miller his nursery teacher.

“ROAR” Little Ted replied.

“Now let me guess what you’ve come as, is it a fierce dinosaur?”

“ROAR” Little Ted said “I’m a Steg-O-Saurus, but I only eat plants, not children so you don’t need to worry.”

“That’s lucky” said Mrs Miller “Otherwise I might have to think twice about letting you in and I’d have to count all the children to make sure none were missing before you went home.”

Once everyone had arrived the teacher got all the children to stand in a circle and asked them to introduce their animal and say why this was their favourite.

When it was Little Ted’s turn he started with a ROAR then explained why he liked dinosaurs so much.

“Dinosaurs are really interesting because they lived a very long time ago before there were people and there are lots of different kinds. They have funny sounding names and some were very big and some quite small and one called a Ty-Ran-O-Saurus was the fiercest animal that every lived.”

“Thank you Little Ted. I certainly think you’re the loudest animal we have here today, so maybe we’ll call you Rory for rest of the day.”

Little Ted laughed and replied with a ROAR.
