Little Ted builds a den

It's raining and Little Ted doesn't know what to do until his Mummy suggests building a den and its going to be the best den ever.

Little Ted was feeling bored. It was raining (again) and the forecast said the rain would continue all day.

“I don’t know what to do” Little Ted said “I’m bored”.

“You can’t be bored” replied his Mummy “There’s lot of things you can be doing. Go and play with your toys, read a book or why not build a den?”

“What do you mean build a den? ” Little Ted asked “What’s a den?”

“It’s a cosy little hidey hole where you can hang out. You’ll need to push some chairs together, hang blankets over them and add in some pillows and cushions and if you can find them, fairy lights. It’s your space so its up to you how you create it.”

Little Ted liked this idea. He had played in a den before but that time his Daddy had made it. Now he had the whole day to create the best den ever and he knew just where to build it – in the living room. But first he had to get the duvet from his bedroom and maybe his favourite soft toy Fluffy as Little Ted was sure Fluffy would want to play in the den with him.

Soon the living room was transformed. Little Ted had pushed one of the big chairs close to the table and draped a blanket between them. Then he put his duvet and a couple of cushions inside the makeshift tent so it was cosy and comfy. Next he decided to build an extension by balancing a broom between the table and another chair and covering it with a sheet. It was a bit saggy so Little Ted put cushions along the side to stop the sheet slipping and then he found some clothes pegs would allow him to peg the sheet up to create a grand entrance. It was perfect.

Now that the den was built Little Ted had to stock it with provisions so he went to the kitchen.

“Mummy, can I have some biscuits please so I don’t starve in my den. And something to drink in case I’m thirsty” Little Ted said. “And maybe some popcorn too so Fluffy doesn’t feel left out.”

Little Ted’s Mummy smiled and she prepared a tray with a feast fit for a king, or at least a small boy and his favourite soft toy. Then because she couldn’t find any fairy lights that worked, she gave Little Ted a head torch and he sat looking at the pictures in his favourite story book.

“Do you want to come into my den Mummy? I think there’s enough room for you as well. But first you’ll have to guess the password.”

“Thank you for the invitation Little Ted, it looks very impressive. Now I wonder what the password could be. Is it cookies?“ asked his Mummy noticing that all the biscuits has disappeared.

“No” Little Ted said giggling “Try again”

“How about Bananarama?”

“No Mummy, that’s just silly.”

“Fluffy? Said his Mummy hopefully noticing the rabbit propped up on a cushion.

“Yeah, that’s right it’s Fluffy, you may enter. Welcome to my den” Little Ted said

Little Ted’s Mummy crawled in beside him and lay back on the pillows.

“This is very comfy, I might fall asleep” and little by little, his Mummy nodded off

When Daddy came back after work he couldn’t find Little Ted or Mummy, until he looked in their den hideaway and found the pair of them snuggled up together having a nap.

“Wakey wakey sleeping beauties “ said his Daddy “It’s den o’clock and its denner-time”
