Little Ted, dog and duck
Show Notes Transcript

It's a warm day so Little Ted and his Mummy take a walk down to the river and Little Ted has a paddle beside the ducks.

Little Ted was drawing a picture.

“That’s a good picture” said his Mummy “Is it a cat?”

“No” Little Ted said “It’s a doggy. It’s the doggy that lives across the road.”

Little Ted liked dogs, particularly if they were small and fluffy. The one that lived near him was called “Milo” and was a reddy-brown colour, so he found his brown pen and started to colour in the picture.

“Look, it has a curly tail, just like Milo. And he’s wagging it because he is going on a walk.”

“I wonder where they will go on their walk. Perhaps they are going to the park?” suggested his Mummy.

“I don’t think so, it’s too hot for the park. Maybe they will go to the river so Milo can go in the water” Little Ted said. “Can we go to the river – I’d like to go paddling too.”

“Well let’s take a walk down to the river although I’m not too sure about going paddling. It will depend how high the water is, but we’ll take a towel just in case.”

Little Ted and his Mummy set off. As well as the towel, his Mummy had packed a snack for them both and a drink. She also brought a rug for them to sit on. The weather was warm so they dawdled along, taking their time and chatting about all the things they saw.

“Look Mummy, there’s a bird” Little Ted said pointing up at the tree.

“So there is Little Ted. I think it’s a Blackbird and it looks like he’s singing. Listen very carefully and you’ll hear it singing to his friends.”

Little Ted stopped and listened. He could hear the Blackbird loudly chirping away.

“I wonder what he’s saying?”

“Maybe he’s telling his friends about the little boy and his mother who are walking under his tree.”

A little while later they came to the river. There was a shallow area with a sandy bank and his Mummy laid out the rug and sat down.

“See over there Little Ted, there’s another bird on the other side of the river. It looks like a lady duck. “

“How do you know it’s a girl?” Little Ted asked.

“Because she is brown in colour. The boy duck is greyer with a green head. Keep an eye out and you may be able to spot him too.”

Little Ted enjoyed watching the duck swimming in the river. It looked like she was just sitting on the water, but underneath her legs were paddling away to move her along.

“Do you think Mrs Duck would like a piece of my sandwich” Little Ted asked.

“Maybe a small piece. You can throw a part of the crust into the water for her. But not too much, ducks mostly eat pond weed and bugs that live in the water.”

“Yeugh, I don’t think I’d like to be a duck. But I would like to try paddling. Can I dip my toes in the water?”

“Make sure you take your socks and shoes off first and stay next to the bank. Remember it can be very slippy underneath the water.”

Little Ted pottered around, trying to see if he could spot any fish or other creatures in the water. And when his feet started to get cold he hopped back onto the bank and let his Mummy rub them dry.

“I’ve decided, I definitely wouldn’t want to be a duck” Little Ted said “Too wet and cold. And I don’t think pond weed will taste very nice.”

“That’s lucky Little Ted” said his Mummy “Because who would help me finish these sandwiches.”
