Little Ted has only just had his lunch and he's already hungry (for ice cream). But first he must race his Daddy around a mini obstacle course in the garden..

Little Ted said... “I’m hungry".

“You’re hungry? But you’ve just had your lunch” answered his Daddy sounding surprised.

“That’s because I only had a little sandwich for lunch. And now it needs an ice cream to keep it company” Little Ted replied.

“Aah now I understand. Well my Daddy always said to me that if you want an ice cream, you have to run round the garden first, to make room for it.”

“That’s silly Daddy. There’s already plenty of room.”

“Plenty of room for what” asked his Mummy as she came into the room.

“Little Ted reckons he’s hungry and needs an ice cream to keep his sandwich company.”

“Did you tell him he’d have to run round the garden first? To make space for it. Actually, I’ve a better idea. it’s a nice afternoon - we could set up a miniature obstacle course and you two can have a competition. First prize is the ice cream of your choice.”

Little Ted thought an obstacle course sounded good fun and helped his Mummy and Daddy as they set this up. They used a garden cane balanced on two plant pots as a jump and another cane was balanced between the fence and a chair for them to limbo underneath.  Then they made the paddling pool which still had water in it from the day before, into a water hazard. What else could they use?

“We could use the ladder” said his Mummy “If we lie it flat on the ground you can pretend the squares between each rung are stepping stones. “

“I like that idea” said his Daddy “And for the grand finale we can use an old sheet, put something heavy at the corners and try to crawl underneath.”

Little Ted’s Mummy and Daddy also made up some extra games, like running on the spot, hopping for 30 seconds and trying to walk while balancing a bean bag on your head, and soon his Mummy declared that the course was complete.

“Okay dokey if everyone is ready. Take your positions on the starting line. On your marks, get set, GO” and Little Ted and his Daddy set off.

As they tackled the obstacle course, Little Ted found that some obstacles like jumping the water hazard were really hard, because he only had little legs. But then he found that others like the limbo pole and the stepping stones much easier, because he was smaller and only had little legs. As they came to the final obstacle they were side by side.

“Oh no” said his Daddy looking at the sheet they were to crawl under. “I don’t know if I’ll fit under that.”

“I will” Little Ted said and he dived underneath and wriggled his way to the other side.

“Yippee! I win, I win, I win” he shouted.

“Yes you did Little Ted, well done.” said his Daddy puffing slightly.

“Can we go and get ice cream now?”

“In 5 minutes Little Ted. You need to let your Daddy get his breath back” said his Mummy laughing.

Soon Mummy and Daddy were walking down the street to the corner shop, with Little Ted swinging in between them. When they got there, he took his time deciding which ice cream to choose as his winning prize.

“I know which one I’m going to have, can I have that one please” Little Ted said pointing at a picture of a Cornetto. “It looks like a tasty trophy for the winner of the race.”
